Girard Engineering Awarded US Coast Guard Headquarters Project

Falls Church, VA—Girard Engineering, PC, a leading mechanical/electrical consulting engineering firm, has been selected to provide building engineering services for the new US Coast Guard headquarters on the grounds of the former Saint Elizabeths Hospital in southeast Washington, DC. The firm is part of a design-build team led by Clark Construction Group of Bethesda, Md.

The $435 million project, which will be designed to LEED®-Gold certification standards, will encompass 1.2 million square feet of office space as well as a parking garage and a central utility plant. The U.S. General Services Administration is overseeing the design and construction of the headquarters, to be located on the 176-acre West Campus of the hospital. The project will incorporate state-of-the-art technologies including green roofs; landscaped courtyards designed to capture and reuse surface water runoff; and innovative heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

Architectural firms involved in the ambitious project include Perkins & Will, which developed the initial bridging documents; HOK; Quinn Evans Architects; McKissack & McKissack; and WDG Architecture. Construction is set to begin in September 2009 and will be completed in 2013.
