Two Girard Projects Awarded LEED® Platinum

Falls Church, VA—Two major office construction projects, 1225 Connecticut Avenue, NW, and 700 Sixth Street, NW, have been awarded LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Girard Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design for both projects, which are located in downtown Washington, D.C.

The first office building along the East Coast to be awarded LEED Platinum certification, 1225 Connecticut Avenue, NW, is a seven-story, freestanding building that was recently gutted and modernized. RTKL designed the renovation for owner Brookfield Properties, with the James G. Davis Construction Company as general contractor.

The Class A building now features a distinctive glass curtainwall with floor-to-ceiling windows, state-of-the-art chillers, a heat recovery enthalpy wheel for optimum indoor air quality, and a solar-reflective roof. The ambitious renovation has yielded a 23% reduction in energy costs.

The second LEED Platinum project, 700 Sixth Street, NW, is located adjacent to Gallery Place in the Penn Quarter district of Washington, D.C. The office tower features a striking design with a glass curtainwall façade, a three-story atrium lobby, and high-performance building systems that include fiber optics and T1 voice/data. Designed by HOK, the property has the largest green roof on a private-sector building in the city, a fitness center, and an advanced security system. The building supplies ample fresh air with carbon dioxide monitors and advanced systems for ventilation, and has water-conserving fixtures and energy-efficient building equipment. The project was constructed by Balfour Beatty for Akridge.

Based in Falls Church, Va., Girard Engineering provides comprehensive mechanical and electrical engineering services through all phases of design and construction, from conceptual design through final system commissioning. The firm’s practice includes office, institutional, educational, and multifamily residential projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
